American Football and Canadian Football the first of a series of four or (in Canadian football) three downs (see down n.4 5); (also) a gain of ten or more yards, by which the offensive team is entitled to a new series of downs; frequently attributive.Rules regarding the number of downs permitted and yards required have changed over time.
