Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French fluorique.
Etymology: < French fluorique (1782 or earlier) < fluor fluor n.1 + -ique -ic suffix, itself after German Flußspat- (in Flußspat-Säure, 1777 or earlier: see below). Compare post-classical Latin fluoricus (1786 or earlier; < French).Quot. 1783 refers to a work by C. W. Scheele, Chemische Abhandlung von der Luft und dem Feuer (1777), which on page 85 uses German Flußspat-Säure ‘fluoric acid’. In the French version of this, Traité chimique de l'air et du feu (1784), the acid is called acide spathique fluor, but fluorique is not used in the work.

Originally: of, relating to, or obtained from fluorspar. In later use (chiefly Mineralogy): containing fluorine or its compounds.Recorded earliest in fluoric acid n. at Compounds.
