单词 anoveward
释义

anovewardadv.prep.

Forms:

α. Old English on ufeweard, late Old English on ufwyrd, Middle English onoueward, Middle English onouewarde.

β. Middle English anoneward (probably transmission error), Middle English anouewar (probably transmission error), Middle English anoueward, Middle English anoueward, Middle English anouewarde, Middle English anouwarde, Middle English anoward, Middle English anowarde.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: on- prefix, oveward adj.; anoven adv., -ward suffix.
Etymology: < on- prefix + oveward adj. In later use perhaps partly < anoven adv. + -ward suffix, with reduction of the third syllable. The β. forms show reduction of the first element; compare an- prefix1.Middle English anoneward at β. forms, if not simply a transmission error due to minim confusion, could perhaps show association with onward adv. (compare onward adv. 3). Compare an isolated Old English attestation which apparently shows related ufanweard (see oveward adj.) as second element:lOE Anglo-Saxon Chron. (Laud) (Peterborough contin.) anno 1122 Þa com se fir on ufenweard þone stepel, & forbearnde ealle þe minstre.
