Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian flauto piccolo.
Etymology: < Italian flauto piccolo (1573 in a commentary on Horace, explaining classical Latin tibia pipe or flute: see tibia n.) < flauto flauto n. + piccolo piccolo adj.The phrase is attested earlier (e.g. 1765, 1775) in instrumental indications in scores, of songs published in English in England. In Italian, a small transverse flute or piccolo is more commonly called ottavino ( < ottava octave n.2 + -ino -ine suffix4).
Music. Now chiefly historical.
A small, high-pitched flute; spec. (a) a small end-blown flute or recorder; (b) a small transverse flute; a piccolo. Cf. flauto n. 1, flute n.1 1a.
