Etymology: < American Spanish (Mexico and southern U.S.) flauta (apparently not recorded earlier than quot. 1938), extended sense of Spanish flauta flute (see flute n.¹), with allusion to the long, cylindrical shape of this snack.

In Mexican cookery: a dish typically consisting of a tortilla that is rolled around a filling of meat and cheese and then fried.
