Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Fluorindin.

Etymology: < German Fluorindin (attributed to H. Caro by O. N. Witt 1887, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 20 1540) < fluor- , variant (before vowels) of fluoro- fluoro- comb. form + ind- (in Indulin induline n.) + -in -ine suffix⁵; so called on account of their fluorescence and their preparation from indulines.

Any of a class of heteroaromatic compounds derived from indulines, many of which show a red fluorescence in solution and have been used as dyes.Fluorindines have a pentacyclic structure of three benzene rings with both pairs of adjacent rings joined at two points by nitrogen atoms.
