Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin animalitas.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin animalitas animal nature, vitality (11th cent.), merely animal nature as distinguished from the moral and spiritual (12th cent.), animal life as opposed to that of plants (13th cent.) < classical Latin animāl animal adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1). Compare Old French animaliteit (end of the 12th cent.), Middle French animalité (1442) collection of qualities and functions which are the attributes of a living creature, French animalité collection of attributes of an animal, as opposed to a human, also animal-like behaviour by a human (both late 18th cent. or earlier), collection of attributes of a human or other animal, as opposed to a plant (1814), the animal world (1764 in the passage translated in quot. 1766 at sense 3). Compare humanity n., brutality n.
