Etymology: < post-classical Latin festialis (c1450 or earlier; variant or alteration of festivalis festival n.), the Latin form of the title of Mirk's work (also Liber Festialis , Liber Festivalis , both 15th cent.; compare post-classical Latin festivalis festival adj.). Compare slightly earlier festial adj.
Now historical.
A set of sermons for each feast day of the church calendar; = festival n. 1.Originally and chiefly with reference to the very popular late 14th-century collection by John Mirk (see quot. a1450).
