Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French ferrumination; Latin ferrūminātiōn-, ferrūminātiō.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French ferrumination (1576 in the source translated in quot. 1606; French †ferrumination ), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin ferrūminātiōn-, ferrūminātiō action of soldering or cementing (2nd cent. a.d.) < ferrūmināt- , past participial stem of ferrūmināre (see ferruminate v.) + -iō -ion suffix1.The French original translated in quot. 1606 does not use ferrumination in the translated passage, but continues: Pline l'appelle ferrumination, de laquelle vsoyent les faux monnoyeurs de son temps ‘Pliny calls it ferrumination, which was practised by the coin counterfeiters of his time’. N.E.D. (1895) gives the pronunciation as (fĕrū:minēi·ʃən) /fəˌruːmɪˈneɪʃən/.
