Perhaps (i) < a variant of fume v. in an otherwise unattested sense ‘to cause to smell’ (perhaps a negative application of fume v. 1c), or perhaps (ii) < French fumer to manure, to soil (see fumet n.¹, and compare fumishing n.).Apparently intended as a present participle (compare -and suffix¹), with the auxiliary verb understood. Jonson’s imagined Sherwood dialect appears to owe much to northern English and Scots.
