单词 fewm
释义

fewmv.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: fume v.; French fumer.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) < a variant of fume v. in an otherwise unattested sense ‘to cause to smell’ (perhaps a negative application of fume v. 1c), or perhaps (ii) < French fumer to manure, to soil (see fumet n.1, and compare fumishing n.).Apparently intended as a present participle (compare -and suffix1), with the auxiliary verb understood. Jonson’s imagined Sherwood dialect appears to owe much to northern English and Scots. Compare a later use, based on the instance in Jonson and evidently interpreting that as meaning ‘smelly, stinking’:1783 F. G. Waldron Contin. in B. Jonson's Sad Shepherd iii. 71 Sprad in a spongy fungus' fewmand shade, This swoll'n and speckle-bellied toad was laid.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. Meaning uncertain: perhaps ‘to cause to smell’; or perhaps ‘to foul, soil’.
