单词 anastenaria
释义

Anastenarian.

Brit. /əˌnastᵻˈnɛːrɪə/, U.S. /əˌnæstəˈnɛriə/
Forms:

α. 1800s– Anastenaria, 1900s– Anestenaria.

β. 1900s– Nastenaria, 1900s– Nestenaria.

Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek Αναστενάρια, Νεστενάρια.
Etymology: < modern Greek Αναστενάρια, Ανεστενάρια, (aphetic (regional: Thrace)) Νεστενάρια, (rare) Ναστενάρια ecstatic Orthodox Christian sect of north-eastern Greece, members of this sect collectively, the celebration during which the sect's members walk barefoot across hot coals, further etymology uncertain and disputed.Further etymology. None of the various suggestions for the etymology of the modern Greek word is generally accepted; it is possible that the modern Greek word is an alteration of an earlier form after words which are more common in the modern language. A frequent suggestion is that the noun ultimately derives < ancient Greek ἀναστένειν to groan aloud, to bemoan ( < ἀνα- ana- prefix + στένειν to groan, to moan < a different ablaut grade (with movable s- ) of the Indo-European base of classical Latin tonāre : see tonant adj.) + -αρια , neuter plural of -αρης -ary suffix1, with reference to the sighs emitted by the participants as they walk in trance. (Modern Greek only uses the suffixed derivative verb αναστενάζω ‘to sigh’ rather than *αναστένω .) Another suggestion is that the parent verb is modern Greek ανασταίνω ‘to rise, to resurrect’, ultimately < ancient Greek ἀνίσταναι (see anastasis n.). Yet another suggestion takes the attested modern Greek forms as variants (with dissimilation of consonants) of an unattested form *Αναστρήναρια < ancient Greek ἀνα- ana- prefix + *στρηνάρης possessed (ultimately < Hellenistic Greek στρῆνος unbridled desire (see strenuous adj.) + -άρης -ary suffix2). Specific forms. With the β. forms compare also Bulgarian nestinarstvo ecstatic Orthodox Christian sect of north-eastern Greece, members of this sect collectively, the celebration during which the sect's members walk barefoot across hot coals, and nestinar (chiefly in plural nestinare) a member of the sect, both probably < modern Greek.
