Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Greenlandic Inuit. Etymons: German Anorak; Greenlandic Inuit annoraaq.
Etymology: < (i) German Anorak Greenlandic garment (1867 or earlier), weatherproof jacket (1941 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) Greenlandic Inuit annoraaq (formerly written ánorâ k), originally a specific use of a word denoting clothing more generally, cognate with Eastern Canadian Inuit annuraaq piece of clothing.
1. A hooded garment, waist-length or longer, made of skin or (later) cloth, usually pulled over the head rather than fastened, and worn in the Arctic, esp. by the Inuit of Greenland. Cf. parka n. 1.
