Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin fastīgāt-, fastīgāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin fastīgāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of fastīgāre to make pointed, to make to slope, probably < the same Indo-European base as brust n. Compare fastigiate v.It has been suggested that fastīgāre is a back formation from fastīgātus (see fastigiate adj.) but this would presuppose a noun *fastigum which is not attested.
Obsolete.
transitive. To make (something) taper up towards a point. Also intransitive: to taper up towards a point. Cf. fastigiate v.Only recorded in dictionaries.
