Origin: Probably a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian antipasto.
Etymology: Probably < Italian antipasto antipasto n., with loss of the final vowel, perhaps after repast n. Compare slightly later antipasto n. Compare also later postpast n.
1. Something eaten before or at the start of a meal to whet the appetite. Cf. postpast n. Obsolete.
