Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin antefīxum.
Etymology: < classical Latin antefīxum part or object fixed in front of something, (plural) ornamental figures or tiles placed at the edge of a roof, use as noun of neuter of antefīxus fixed in front < ante- ante- prefix + fīxus , past participle of fīgere to fix (see fix v.).
Classical Architecture.
An ornamental fixture placed on the eaves or cornice of a building to conceal the end of a tile; (also) an ornamental head, etc., forming a spout from a gutter. Frequently in plural.
