Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin antecursor.
Etymology: < classical Latin antecursor forerunner, (in plural antecursores ) leading troops, vanguard < ante- ante- prefix + cursor cursor n., after antecurrere to run in front. Compare precursor n.
1. A person who goes in advance. Chiefly Roman History: a member of the advance guard of an army; one of an army's pioneers. Obsolete.

Soc. 163 A ‘pioneer’ proper is one that precedes an army, in order to clear the way of obstructions, to repair or make roads, build bridges, construct intrenchments, and so on, analogous to the ‘antecursor’ of the old Roman army, whose duties were similar to those here described.
