Etymology: < Latin expiscāt-, participial stem of expiscārī, < ex- out + piscārī to fish, < piscis fish.
a. transitive. To ‘fish out’; hence, to find out by scrutiny. Occasionally with sentence as object. Chiefly in Scottish writers; elsewhere usually humorously, with distinct reference to the etymology.
