Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin analphabetus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin analphabetus illiterate (a1546) < ancient Greek ἀναλϕάβητος < ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἀλϕάβητος alphabet n. In use as noun and in later use as adjective probably chiefly after corresponding forms in other languages: compare German †Analphabetus (16th cent.), Analphabet , †Analphabet (beginning of the 19th cent.; also in sense ‘idiot’), nouns, analphabeten , adjective (1867), Italian analfabeta , †analfabeto , noun (1676), Portuguese analfabeto , adjective and noun (a1710), Spanish analfabeto , adjective and noun (end of the 19th cent.), French analphabète (16th cent. in Middle French as noun in apparently isolated use, subsequently from the early 20th cent. as both noun and adjective).
