Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin existimāt-, existimāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin existimāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of existimāre to value, esteem, to form or hold an opinion of, to judge, consider, to think, suppose < ex- ex- prefix1 + aestimāre estimate v. Compare earlier existimation n.
Now somewhat rare (chiefly literary or humorously pedantic).
1. transitive. To consider, think, regard; = esteem v. 5.The sense in quot. c1430 is unclear.
