Designating a sundial comprising a movable gnomon (gnomon n. 1a) perpendicular to a dial plane with hour points arranged in an ellipse, the position of the gnomon at a particular time of year being determined by an analemma projection.For large dials, a person standing in the correct position can act as the gnomon.
