单词 examinant
释义

examinantn.adj.

Brit. /ᵻɡˈzamᵻnənt/, /ɛɡˈzamᵻnənt/, U.S. /ɪɡˈzæmənənt/, /ɛɡˈzæmənənt/
Forms:

α. 1500s– examinant, 1600s examinante, 1600s examminant.

β. 1500s examinentes (plural), 1500s examynent, 1600s–1700s examinent.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin exāminant-, exāmināre.
Etymology: < classical Latin exāminant-, present participle of exāmināre examine v. With β. forms compare -ent suffix.Sense A. 1 is unusual, since, although it derives from a Latin present participle, it means ‘a person who is being examined’ rather than ‘a person who conducts an examination’. Although supporting evidence appears to be lacking, it is conceivable that earlier examinate n. may have been taken to mean properly ‘a person who has been examined’ rather than ‘a person who is being examined’, in accordance with its derivation from a Latin past participle, and that the Latin present participle may subsequently have been adopted into English in order to express the sense ‘a person who is being examined’.
Now rare.
