Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin angsana (also angsava, apparently originally a transmission error (1685 or earlier)), and its (ii) etymon Malay angsana (also ansenna), probably < Old Javanese, Javanese asana, although this apparently denotes the distinctively different saj tree (apparently < an Indian language; compare Sanskrit asana, āsana saj tree).

The narra tree, Pterocarpus indicus, a tall leguminous tree native to South-East Asia which bears panicles of fragrant orange or yellow flowers and secretes a bright red resin previously used in medicine (more fully angsana tree). Also (more fully angsana wood): the reddish wood of this tree.
