Origin: A borrowing from Swedish. Etymon: Swedish snus.

Etymology: < Swedish snus snuff (1664), either a shortening of snus-tobak (1642; < snusa (see below) + tobak tobacco n.), or directly < snusa to sniff, to snuff, to snore (although this is first attested later: 1712; probably < the same base as snut snout n.¹); compare also snuv-tobak (1637: see snuff n.³).

A type of moist powdered tobacco originally developed in Sweden, which is prepared by means of air-drying and steam-pasteurization and is typically taken orally.
