Etymology: < scientific Latin Angophora, genus name ( A. J. Cavanilles Icones et Descriptiones Plantarum (1797) IV. 21) < ancient Greek ἄγγος jar (see angio- comb. form) + -ϕόρος bearing (see -phore comb. form) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix². The genus is so called on account of the vase-like fruits of some species.

Any plant of the genus Angophora (family Myrtaceae), comprising evergreen trees and shrubs native to eastern Australia, having opposite leaves, inflorescences consisting of five-petalled whitish flowers with numerous long stamens, and fruits which are cup-shaped ribbed capsules.
