/ˈɛksɪtrɒn/ A kind of mercury-arc rectifier having a pool cathode and a single anode, and capable of handling large currents; it differs from an ignitron in having a cathode hot spot maintained continuously and a grid to control the output.

1940 O. K. Marti in Trans. A.I.E.E. LIX. 928/2 Tests encouraged the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company to build a six anode rectifier, consisting of six single tanks using an ignition-excitation system for the main arc with a continuous cathode spot... This type of rectifier has been called the Excitron rectifier.

1950 P. G. Andres Surv. Mod. Electronics vi. 248 An important improvement in the field of mercury-arc rectification consisted in the development of a single-anode rectifier..equipped with auxiliary electrodes for establishing and controlling the arc current. A group of such individual tanks are assembled to produce a polyphase rectifier termed an Excitron.
1958 Engineering 14 Mar. 341/3 The excitron uses the conventional continuous excitation (supplied by an auxiliary d.c. source) throughout every cycle.
