Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: hectic adj., -y suffix3.
Etymology: Apparently < hectic adj. (compare α. forms at that entry) + -y suffix3 (compare -cy suffix, -sy suffix1). Compare Middle French ethisie (1545 or earlier; 1570 as hectisie ; French étisie ), post-classical Latin etica (15th cent. in a British source), variant of classical Latin hectica (see hectic n.). In β. forms after Italian †etesia, †ethesia, †ettesia (all 1561 in the text translated in quot. 1582, or earlier; 1671 as etisia ), apparently irregularly < etico , †ettico (see hectic adj.) + -ia -ia suffix1, after names of medical conditions in -esia (as e.g. frenesia (see frenzy n.), †idropesia (see hydropsy n.), etc.
Medicine. Obsolete.
= hectic n. 1a.In quot. 1527 the sense may be ‘a person affected with a hectic fever’; cf. phthisic n. 2, and later hectic n. 2.
