Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin recrēscent-, recrēscēns.
Etymology: < classical Latin recrēscent-, recrēscēns, present participle of recrēscere to grow anew ( < re- re- prefix + crēscere to grow: see crescent adj.): see -ence suffix. Compare post-classical Latin recrescentia new growth (14th cent. in a British source). Compare earlier excrescence n., and also crescence n.

The regeneration or regrowth of a lost body part.
