Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: ethno- comb. form, Greek ϕαύλισμα.
Etymology: < ethno- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek ϕαύλισμα disparagement, contempt < ancient Greek ϕαυλίζειν to hold cheap ( < ϕαῦλος cheap, of unknown origin (perhaps related to ϕλαῦρος cheap, with dissimilation) + -ίζειν -ize suffix) + -μα (see -oma comb. form).
A contemptuous expression for (a member of) a people or ethnic group; an expression containing a disparaging allusion to another people or ethnic group.
