Etymology: < eth- comb. form + -ionine (in methionine n.).
Chemistry.
A toxic amino acid, not present in proteins, that is the ethyl homologue of methionine and acts as a growth inhibitor.Systematic name: 2-amino-4-(ethylthio)butanoic acid; C2H5S·CH2CH2CH(NH2)·COOH.
