Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin entropium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin entropium (1755 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἐντροπή action of turning towards ( < ἐν- en- prefix2 + τροπή turn, turning (see trope n.), after ἐντρέπειν to turn inwards) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix4), after ectropium ectropion n. Compare earlier ectropion n.The β. forms show remodelling of the ending after either ectropion n. or perhaps French entropion (1808 or earlier; 1792 as antropium).
Medicine.
A condition in which the edge of an eyelid is turned inwards, often resulting in irritation of the eye by the lashes, and typically occurring as a result of scarring or muscle spasm, or as an inherited trait in various breeds of domestic animal; an instance of this.
