Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin entrochus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin entrochus (1546 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἐν in (see en- prefix2) + τροχός wheel (see trochus n.). With the semantic motivation compare trochite n.In quot. 1661 with remodelling after ancient Greek τροχός.
Palaeontology. Now historical and rare.
A section of the stem of a fossil crinoid of the (disused) genus Entrochus, consisting of several rounded segments or ossicles having prominent central cavities. Sometimes also: a single ossicle; = trochite n.
