Etymology: < Anglo-Norman entret, Anglo-Norman and Middle French entrait plaster, poultice (late 12th cent. in Old French; in Anglo-Norman also feminine entraite , entrete ), use as noun of feminine past participle of entraire to approach (12th cent., reflexive), to pull (a person or thing) inwards (13th cent.) < classical Latin intrahere to drag along (see intracted adj.). The plaster was so called because it serves to keep the sides of a wound together.Compare Old Occitan (Gascon) entreit, in the same sense (c1400).
Medicine. Obsolete.
A medicinal plaster (plaster n. 1a) or poultice.
