Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anabaptista.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anabaptista (1528 or earlier) < ana- ana- prefix + baptista baptist n., perhaps after Byzantine Greek ἀναβαπτίζειν anabaptize v. Compare later Anabaptism n., and (with the use as adjective) earlier Anabaptistical adj., anabaptizing adj.Compare Middle French, French anabaptiste (1525 as noun; also as adjective), Spanish anabaptista, noun (a1520); also Dutch anabaptist, German Anabaptist, nouns (both 1534). Compare also the Germanic formations Dutch wederdoper (1529 as †wederdoeper), Middle Low German wederdȫper, wedderdȫper (1530 or earlier), German Wiedertäufer (1527 as †wyderteuffer, first attested in Swiss sources).

A member of various Christian groups who trace their origins to the radical reformation movement in Germany, Switzerland, and the Low Countries in the 16th century, characterized by a strict adherence to Bible teachings, and the belief that baptism is only valid when administered to people old enough to fully understand the sacrament.Groups such as the Mennonites, the Amish, and the Hutterites are descendants of the early Anabaptist movement.
