单词 everglades
释义

Evergladesn.

Brit. /ˈɛvəɡleɪdz/, U.S. /ˈɛvərˌɡleɪdz/
Forms:

α. (In singular form, chiefly in attributive use) 1800s– Everglade.

β. (In plural form) 1800s– Everglades.

Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Probably from a proper name. Etymon: proper name River Glades.
Etymology: Probably a misreading of River Glades, the name given to the region by its surveyor J. W. G. de Brahm (1773 in an unpublished map of the coast of Florida; < river n.1 + the plural of glade n.2). With the second element compare glade n.2 2a. See further E. W. McMullen ‘The Origin of the Term Everglades’ in Amer. Speech 28 (1953) 26–34, and the comment on this by J. B. McMillan in Amer. Speech 28 (1953) 201.It has alternatively been suggested that the first element may show ever adv., but this poses semantic problems. A conjectural sense ‘interminable’, which has sometimes been posited for the first element with reference to the vastness of the swampland, is not attested for either ever adv. or ever adj. (the latter is obsolete after the early 17th cent.). Although the source cited in quot. 1823 also uses the name Eternal Glades for the area (on the same page), this is probably a rationalization of Everglades. In attributive use frequently with the second element in the singular.
Chiefly with the. With plural or singular agreement. (The name of) a large area of grassy wetland and coastal mangrove swamps in southern Florida. Occasionally also in extended use: a large swampy region.Part of the area in Florida was dedicated as a National Park in 1947.
