Etymology: German (L. Gmelin Handb. d. Chemie (1848) IV. 161), probably < essig vinegar + äther ether.
Chemistry.
A derivative of an acid in which one or more acidic hydrogen atoms are replaced by an alkyl, aryl, or similar group; acrylic ester n. (see quot. 1951). Also attributive and in other combinations. ester gum n. (see quot. 1940).
