Etymology: < ancient Greek ἐπιχώριος in or of the country (see epichorial adj.) + -ic suffix. Compare German epichorisch (1876 with reference to Cyprian script (compare quot. 1880); 1850 or earlier with reference to ancient Italic dialects), French épichorique (1859 or earlier). Compare earlier epichorial adj.

Characteristic of or peculiar to a particular country or district. Cf. epichorial adj.Chiefly with reference to the multitude of local alphabets used in ancient Greece before the introduction of the standard Ionic alphabet around 400 b.c.
