Etymology: < moodish adj. + -ly suffix2.The word is listed in T. L. O. Davies Suppl. Eng. Gloss. (1881) as occurring in an unspecified edition of Richardson's Hist. Sir Charles Grandison (I. let. xxii.) with the sense ‘sulkily’. This appears to be based on a misreading of moodily (moodily adv.), which occurs in all early editions, subsequently taken up by other late 19th-cent. dictionaries.
