In an orchid flower: the terminal part of any labellum divided into distinct sections; = epichile n. Cf. hypochilium n. at hypo- prefix 2, mesochilium n.

1877 Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts & Sci. 1876–7 12 83 I refer it to the South American genus Chloræa..on account of its habit, and because there is no articulation between epichilium and hypochilium.

1905 Gardeners' Chron. 5 Aug. 102/3 The petals and the base of the lip have larger and rather deeper coloured blotches; the horns of the blade (the so-called epichilium) of the lip are spotted in the same manner.

1997 Systematic Bot. 22 466/2 A unique apomorphy for this group is the hypochilium with papillae-like hairs on its surface which are absent from the glabrous median part, which in combination with..papillae-like hairs on the epichilium make this species easily recognizable.
