Etymology: < pre- prefix + assume v. Compare post-classical Latin praeassumere to assume or undertake beforehand (a1308, c1343 in British sources), to choose or take beforehand (1344, 1393, 1452 in British sources), to say beforehand (a1536 in Erasmus). With sense 2 compare earlier preassumed adj.
