Etymology: < scientific Latin Ametabola (plural noun), subclass name (1821 or earlier: see quot. 1821) < neuter plural of Hellenistic Greek ἀμετάβολος ( < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + μετάβολος changeable: see metabolon n.¹), as alteration (with etymologically more appropriate ending) of the earlier scientific Latin Ametabolia , plural noun (see ametabolian n. and adj.). Compare Metabola n.

Entomology.

A division of insects comprising those that do not undergo metamorphosis (metamorphosis n. 3a); (with plural agreement) insects of this division.Contrasted with Hemimetabola, Holometabola, Metabola.These insects are wingless, and have also been treated as members of the subclass Apterygota (see Apterygota n.). They include silverfish and bristletails, but many are now considered to be members of the class Entognatha of primitive hexapods, rather than of the class Insecta (insects in the strictest sense).
