Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin ambidextria ; ambidexter n., ambidexter adj., -y suffix3.
Etymology: In sense 1 < post-classical Latin ambidextria practice of taking (legal) fees from both sides (1353, 1448 in British sources) < ambidexter ambidexter adj. + -ia -y suffix3. In sense 2 < either ambidexter n. (compare sense 3 at that entry) or perhaps ambidexter adj. (compare sense 2 at that entry) + -y suffix3.Compare Anglo-Norman ambidextrie , ambidextré , ambedextré (1343 in the specific legal use; French ambidextrie now only in the sense ‘ability to use both hands equally well’ (1837 in this sense)). On the α. forms see note at ambidexter adj.
1. Double-dealing; (spec. Law) the practice of corruptly taking fees or bribes from both sides in a case. Cf. ambidexter n. 2. Now historical.
