Etymology: < engender v. + -ment suffix; in early use apparently after Middle French engendrement (12th cent. in Old French; French engendrement ). Compare earlier engendering n. and engendrure n.Compare Old Occitan engenramen, Catalan engendrament (14th cent.), Spanish engendramiento (13th cent.).
The action of engender v. (in various senses); esp. (in early use) the action of begetting or conceiving children or offspring; (now) the action of causing or giving rise to a feeling, situation, or condition.
