Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: alphabet n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < alphabet n. + -ism suffix, in sense 2 after French alphabétisme (1866 in the text translated in quot. 1870 at sense 2). Compare earlier alphabetist n.In sense 3 after racism n., sexism n.2, etc.; compare -ism suffix Additions b.
1. In the terminology of ‘Olphar Hamst’: a pseudonym consisting of successive letters of the alphabet. Obsolete. rare.
