Etymology: < post-classical Latin alphabetarius, adjective (1531 in the passage translated in quot. 1569 at sense A.; 1564 in a British source) and noun (c1580 denoting an elementary student) < alphabeta alphabet n. + classical Latin -ārius -ary suffix1.
