单词 transmogrify
释义

transmogrifyv.

Brit. /trɑːnzˈmɒɡrᵻfʌɪ/, /tranzˈmɒɡrᵻfʌɪ/, /trɑːnsˈmɒɡrᵻfʌɪ/, /transˈmɒɡrᵻfʌɪ/, U.S. /trænzˈmɑɡrəˌfaɪ/, /træn(t)sˈmɑɡrəˌfaɪ/
Forms: Also 1600s–1800s -mografy, -mography, -mogriphy, 1700s -migrafy, -mugrify.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. If the original form was (as suggested in quot. 1725 at sense a) transmigrafy , this may have been an irregular formation in -fy from transmigure v., or transmigrate v. (compare transmigration n. 3b). Apparently, it was originally persons that were ‘transmografied’, or metamorphosed.
vulgar or humorous.
a. transitive. To alter or change in form or appearance; to transform, metamorphose (utterly, grotesquely, or strangely).
