A process that occurs in some lower ciliates, in which the old macronucleus disintegrates and a new one is formed from micronuclear material without conjugation taking place. XVII. 491 This [rearrangement] involves a more profound intermingling of nuclear and cytoplasmic substances than is possible during the typical vegetative life of the cell.
