Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish alpaca.
Etymology: < Spanish alpaca species of llama (a1602), alpaca wool and textiles made from it (1778) < Aymara allpaqa . Compare earlier paco n.In form alpaco probably influenced by paco n. In form alpagna perhaps influenced by vicuña n. or vigogne n. or one of its Romance etymons.

1. A domesticated South American member of the camel family, Vicugna pacos, resembling a small woolly llama and now widely kept for its fine woolly hair.Believed to have been developed in Peru from the wild vicuña, V. vicugna.
