Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French elisour, eliseur.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman ellisour, eslisour, Anglo-Norman and Middle French (Lorraine) elisour, Middle French eliseur, esliseur elector (c1260 in Old French) < elis- , eslis- , present stem of elire , eslire to choose (see elite v.) + -our -or suffix. Compare elector n.In forms ellyser and elizar with suffix substitution (compare -er suffix2 and -ar suffix3).
