alongstprep.adv.Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: along prep., -s suffix1. Etymology: Either < the genitive of the Germanic base of along adj.2 or < along prep. + -s suffix1 (compare discussion at along adj.2, prep., and adv.). With the development of excrescent final -t (probably reinforced by association with superlatives in -st ) compare against prep., amongst prep., amidst adv., betwixt prep., etc. Compare endlonges prep., endlonges adv.The β. and γ. forms reflect regular reduction of the α. forms (compare forms at along adj.2, prep., and adv. and see discussion at that entry; compare also discussion at and- prefix), although the form in langes (see quot. c1300 at sense A. 1) appears to arise from reanalysis of a reduced form in on- as showing on- prefix and consequent substitution of in- prefix1 (compare also a- prefix3). With the δ. forms compare ε. forms at along adj.2, prep., and adv. and see discussion at that entry. In Old English texts the prefix is sometimes written as the Tironian note; compare discussion at along adj.2, prep., and adv. Now chiefly regional (chiefly Scottish and U.S.).
