Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἐκϕραστικός.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἐκϕραστικός descriptive < the stem of ancient Greek ἐκϕράζειν to recount, in Hellenistic Greek also to describe (see ekphrasis n.) + -τικός , suffix forming adjectives from verbs (compare -ic suffix). Compare post-classical Latin ecphrasticus (1546 or earlier), German ekphrastisch (1881 or earlier). Compare earlier ekphrasis n.
Employing, characterized by, or relating to a literary device in which a painting, sculpture, or other work of visual art is described in detail. See ekphrasis n.
